BB Glow

Semi-permanent 'foundation' microneedled into the skin

BB Glow spread from Russian and Korean salons through Instagram and TikTok as a 'wake up with foundation on' treatment, and dermatologists have been warning against it since it reached Western clinics.

Search interest: about 100 searches a month in Singapore for “bb glow” (Ahrefs, October 2026).

The verdict Caution

It is a whole-face tattoo with cosmetic-grade pigment and a salon needle — and the day you want a pigment laser, the foundation you had implanted becomes the problem.

What it is

A beautician microneedles a tinted serum containing cosmetic pigments — typically titanium dioxide and iron oxides — into the upper skin, sold as a semi-permanent base coat that evens tone for several months.

How it works

This is a shallow tattoo by another name. The pigment that stays is the pigment the needles push into the dermis, where it is held by macrophages exactly as tattoo ink is. The portion in the epidermis sheds in weeks; what remains fades unevenly, and unlike a true cosmetic tattoo it is applied across the whole face in a product never tested for implantation.

What the evidence says

There are no peer-reviewed trials of BB Glow. The relevant literature is cosmetic tattooing and tattoo pigments: reviews document foreign-body granulomas, sarcoidal reactions, allergic reactions to iron oxides and pigment migration, and note that cosmetic pigments are not regulated for injection. Systematic reviews of microneedling add granulomatous reactions to products driven through the skin. Titanium dioxide implanted in skin is also a problem for later laser work: it can darken irreversibly when hit by a Q-switched or picosecond beam.

What the studies show

  1. review

Reviews the loose regulation of cosmetic tattoo pigments and complications including granulomas, allergic reactions, infection and pigment darkening under laser.

Permanent makeup: A review of its technique, regulation, and complications. — Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 2024. PMID 38901732.

  2. review

Summarises inflammatory, allergic and granulomatous reactions to tattoo and cosmetic-tattoo pigments including iron oxides and titanium dioxide.

Cutaneous Adverse Reactions Associated with Tattoos and Permanent Makeup Pigments. — Journal of Clinical Medicine, 2024. PMID 38256637.

  3. systematic review

Granulomas after microneedling-assisted delivery of topical products can be treatment-resistant.

  4. case series

Facial granulomas and systemic hypersensitivity followed microneedling with a topical product not designed for intradermal use.

SuitsWe cannot define a good candidate.Sun spots, freckles, post-acne marks, tattoo ink, uneven tone in Asian skin when energy is set conservatively.Acne scars, enlarged pores, early laxity, melasma-prone skin that cannot take ablative lasers, and selected body contouring when the plane is mapped first.
In one lineIt is a whole-face tattoo with cosmetic-grade pigment and a salon needle — and the day you want a pigment laser, the foundation you had implanted becomes the problem. The variable that matters is depth, not brightness, and pigment already deposited is only half the problem; the inflammation producing it is the other half. The tissue plane, not the device, decides whether you tighten skin or remodel fat. The brand war is a distraction from that.

Risks

Granulomas and allergic reactions to implanted pigment, infection from salon needling, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, uneven greyish fading, and paradoxical blackening of titanium dioxide under later laser.

In Singapore

Offered mainly by beauty salons in Singapore. The tint is a cosmetic product that has not been assessed for implantation into skin; confirm any product's HSA notification with the provider and understand that no doctor at our clinics would implant it.

Questions

Is BB Glow a tattoo?
In effect, yes. Pigment that stays beyond a few weeks is pigment in the dermis, which is what a tattoo is.
Can it be removed?
Not reliably. Titanium dioxide can darken under laser, and whole-face removal is not practical.
What gives an even tone without pigment?
Treating the cause: sunscreen, topical pigment control, and tone-targeted laser work.
