Microblading and nano brows
Semi-permanent brow tattooing
Microblading boomed through the 2010s; the current shift is to 'nano' brows done with a fine tattoo needle, driven by stories of blade-cut strokes blurring and turning grey or orange, including a much-shared celebrity account of years spent removing them.

Established. The strokes are honest for a year; after that you are managing a fading tattoo, which is why the restrained version is the one to choose. Reviews in dermatology journals in 2024 and 2025 describe the technique, its popularity and its complications: infection, allergic and granulomatous reactions, pigment migration and colour shift, scarring from repeated blade work, and distortion when the skin is later treated with filler or anaesthetics.
- Verdict

What it is
Cosmetic tattooing of the eyebrows. Microblading deposits pigment with a hand-held blade of tiny needles, cutting hair-like strokes into the upper dermis. Nano brows use a digital tattoo machine with a single fine needle to draw similar strokes with less trauma, and powder or ombré brows shade the whole brow. All are tattoos: 'semi-permanent' describes how the pigment fades and blurs, not whether it goes away.
How it works
Pigment placed in the dermis is slowly taken up by immune cells and carried away, and the strokes soften and spread over one to three years; iron-oxide browns shift towards orange or grey as components fade at different rates. Blade strokes cut the skin and can scar, which is why repeated microblading produces blurred, raised brows; machine needles cause less scarring and hold crisper lines on oily skin. The artist's hygiene, pigment choice and depth control decide the result, and the brow fashion of the day decides the regret.
What the evidence says
Reviews in dermatology journals in 2024 and 2025 describe the technique, its popularity and its complications: infection, allergic and granulomatous reactions, pigment migration and colour shift, scarring from repeated blade work, and distortion when the skin is later treated with filler or anaesthetics. A 2023 review of granulomatous reactions to microblading found 21 cases, half foreign-body granulomas and half sarcoidosis, some systemic. Removal with lasers is possible but can darken iron-oxide pigment, and is reviewed as its own literature. Regulation and training vary widely between countries and are thin in most.

What the studies show
- review
A surge in demand for microblading has brought subjective dissatisfaction with outcomes and immune-mediated and other complications, which basic precautions reduce.

- review
Permanent makeup carries infectious, allergic and inflammatory complications, more often when hygiene and aftercare are poor, and its appearance can shift after filler or local anaesthetic to the same skin.
Permanent makeup: A review of its technique, regulation, and complications. — J Am Acad Dermatol, 2024. PMID 38901732.
- case series
Of 21 reported granulomatous reactions to microblading, about half were foreign-body granulomas and half sarcoidosis, several systemic.

- review
Laser removal of brow tattoo pigment is feasible with picosecond and Q-switched devices but iron-oxide pigments can darken paradoxically and multiple sessions are usual.

| Verdict | Established | Trend | Trend |
| What it is | Cosmetic tattooing of the eyebrows. | A perm for the eyebrows. | A cosmetic tattoo of the lips: a machine with a fine needle deposits sheer pigment through the vermilion to even out colour, sharpen the border and give the illusion of fullness. |

| Suits | Sparse or asymmetric brows in someone with normal, not very oily, skin who wants low-maintenance definition for a year or two and chooses a conservative, natural shape with a well-trained artist. | Unruly, downward-growing or asymmetric brows with healthy hair and skin, treated no more often than every six to eight weeks by a trained technician. | Pale, uneven or asymmetric lip colour in someone with no history of cold sores or who will take antiviral cover, who wants a sheer tint rather than volume and accepts refreshing it. |
| In one line | The strokes are honest for a year; after that you are managing a fading tattoo, which is why the restrained version is the one to choose. | A trend with real chemistry behind it. A perm is a perm, and the brow has far fewer hairs to spare than the head. | A trend that is really a tattoo with a two-year half-life. The tint can be lovely; the cold sore and the fade are part of the deal. |
Risks
