Moles, warts and skin tags: what works, what doesn't

Three different growths, three different rules. A skin tag is a harmless flap of skin that can be snipped in seconds. A wart is a viral infection of the skin that has to be destroyed or provoked into clearing. A mole is a cluster of pigment cells that may need to be examined under a microscope, which is the single most important fact about removing one. The method should follow the diagnosis, not the device.

About 1,000 searches a month in Singapore for “skin tag removal singapore” (Ahrefs, October 2026). 6 treatments reviewed for this concern.

What works for moles, warts and skin tags?

Skin tags are removed by snip, cautery, cryotherapy or ablation with near-certain results; the medical literature concerns their link with insulin resistance rather than their removal. For moles, systematic reviews in 2026 support surgical shave or excision, which preserve histology and recur less, and caution against laser for any lesion not unequivocally benign because melanomas have been diagnosed late in laser-treated lesions. Warts respond to salicylic acid and cryotherapy as first-line treatment, with laser and immunotherapy for resistant cases; recurrence is common whatever the method.

By the numbers

  1. RCT

In 240 participants with plantar warts, clearance at 12 weeks was similar with cryotherapy and salicylic acid, at about 14 per cent in each group.

From the Wart treatment review — Cryotherapy versus salicylic acid for the treatment of plantar warts (verrucae): a randomised controlled trial., BMJ, 2011. PMID 21652750.

  2. RCT

In photoaged Asian skin the ablative erbium laser improved texture more than the non-ablative 1550 nm laser, with more downtime and a manageable pigment risk.

From the Erbium YAG resurfacing review — A prospective, randomized, double-blind comparison of an ablative fractional 2940-nm erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser with a nonablative fractional 1550-nm erbium-doped glass laser for the treatment of photoaged Asian skin., J Dermatolog Treat, 2015. PMID 26417998.

Three figures from the studies cited across this concern's reviews, chosen for study quality rather than for agreement with the verdicts.

Questions

Can I remove a mole with laser?
For a mole a doctor has examined and judged clearly benign, laser can give a good cosmetic result, with higher recurrence and no tissue to examine. Any mole that is new, changing, irregular or large should be excised and sent for histology instead.
How is a skin tag removed?
Snipped with sterile scissors, frozen, cauterised or ablated, under local anaesthetic or cold spray, in seconds. It does not grow back, though new ones can form.
Does wart removal work?
Salicylic acid and cryotherapy clear most warts over weeks; resistant warts may need laser, cantharidin or immunotherapy. Recurrence is common because the virus persists in surrounding skin.
Will removal leave a scar?
Skin tags leave a small flat mark; shave-removed moles a pale flat mark; excised moles a fine line; warts occasionally a shallow scar. Site and depth matter more than method.
Can a beauty salon remove moles, warts or skin tags in Singapore?
No. Breaking the skin is a medical procedure for registered doctors in licensed clinics.
Why do I keep getting skin tags?
Friction, age, pregnancy and higher body weight; multiple tags are associated with insulin resistance, which is worth checking if they appear suddenly.
