Lip filler and 'Russian lips'
Hyaluronic acid lip augmentation · lip flip · 'Russian technique'
Lip filler remains the most-shown injectable on Instagram and TikTok, and the 'Russian lips' technique, a flat, tall, doll-like shape built with many vertical passes, became its own hashtag before the 2024–25 swing towards dissolving.
Search interest: about 300 searches a month in Singapore for “lip filler” (Ahrefs, October 2026).
Lips are a proportion, not a quantity; the border is the first thing to go when volume is pushed.
Reviewed against the Aesthetics International standard. Category: Injectables.Do Lip filler and 'Russian lips' work?
Established. Lips are a proportion, not a quantity; the border is the first thing to go when volume is pushed. Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid is well supported: a meta-analysis found most people still judged improved at six months, with tenderness, swelling and bruising common and granulomas and vascular events rare.
- Verdict
- Established Long clinical track record. Results depend on selection and technique more than on the device.
- Evidence base
- 4 PubMed-indexed studies cited below, including systematic reviews, randomised trials.
- Suits
- Thin or asymmetric lips, a lost border with age, people who want definition more than size and accept maintenance.
- Not for
- Anyone chasing a filtered shape; lips already carrying migrated product (dissolve first); active cold sores or inflammatory conditions of the lip.
- In Singapore
- Hyaluronic acid fillers are HSA-registered medical devices injected by doctors in Singapore; beauticians and spas may not inject.

What it is
Hyaluronic acid gel injected into the lip to add volume, define the border or correct asymmetry. 'Russian lips' is a technique that places filler vertically from the border towards the wet line to build height rather than projection. A 'lip flip' is a different thing: a small dose of neuromodulator to the upper lip muscle to roll the lip outward.
How it works
Where the gel sits decides the shape: in the body for volume, along the vermilion border for definition, in the philtral columns for a cupid's bow. Filler placed above the border, or too much of it, migrates into the skin and produces the 'filler moustache' shelf now routinely dissolved. Product choice matters: softer gels move naturally, firmer gels hold shape but can look stiff. Longevity in the lip is shorter than elsewhere because the lip moves constantly.
What the evidence says
Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid is well supported: a meta-analysis found most people still judged improved at six months, with tenderness, swelling and bruising common and granulomas and vascular events rare. A quadruple-blind randomised head-to-head trial of four fillers found differences in swelling and firmness but broadly similar aesthetic outcomes. There is no comparative trial of the 'Russian' technique against standard placement; what exists is reviews of complications, which note migration and nodules as the growing problems and relate them to volume and plane rather than brand.
What the studies show
- systematic review
Pooled responder rates were high at two months and declined by twelve; tenderness, swelling and bruising were very common while granulomas and angioedema were rare.

- RCT
Four commercial lip fillers compared directly produced broadly similar aesthetic results, with differences mainly in swelling and tissue response.

Migration, nodules, infection and vascular occlusion are the recurring complications, with technique, volume and plane as the modifiable factors.

|---|---|---|---|
| Verdict | Established | Established | Established |
| What it is | Hyaluronic acid gel injected into the lip to add volume, define the border or correct asymmetry. | Polynucleotides are DNA fragments, usually purified from salmon or trout gonads, injected into the dermis in micro-droplets. | A high-concentration, stabilised hyaluronic acid injected at five points on each side of the face (the BAP technique), from which it spreads through the tissue. |
| Evidence base | 4 PubMed-indexed studies cited below, including systematic reviews, randomised trials. | 3 PubMed-indexed studies cited below, including systematic reviews, randomised trials. | 3 PubMed-indexed studies cited below, including randomised trials. |
| Suits | Thin or asymmetric lips, a lost border with age, people who want definition more than size and accept maintenance. | Thin, crepey under-eye skin; dull, inflamed or acne-prone skin; post-procedure recovery; people who want quality rather than volume. | Crepey, dehydrated skin of the face, neck and hands; people wanting quality not shape; first-time injectable patients. |
| In one line | Lips are a proportion, not a quantity; the border is the first thing to go when volume is pushed. | The injected courses are a sensible part of a skin plan; the salmon-sperm facial is mostly the microneedling doing the work. | One of the few injectables where 'natural' is built into the design. |
Risks
Swelling and bruising for days, lumps, migration, cold-sore reactivation and, rarely, vascular occlusion of the labial artery with tissue loss. The lip is also a common site for self-injection injuries.
In Singapore
Hyaluronic acid fillers are HSA-registered medical devices injected by doctors in Singapore; beauticians and spas may not inject. Correction of migrated lip filler is a routine part of Dr Sin Yong's practice.
