truSculpt iD and SculpSure
Non-invasive RF and laser fat reduction
With fat freezing dented by publicity about paradoxical fat growth, heat-based alternatives are being searched as the 'CoolSculpting without the shelving' option.
Non-invasive fat reduction is honest work at small scale; the brochures are the problem, not the physics.
Reviewed against the Aesthetics International standard. Category: Body.Does truSculpt iD and SculpSure work?
Established. Non-invasive fat reduction is honest work at small scale; the brochures are the problem, not the physics. Single-arm, manufacturer-supported studies with ultrasound measurement report fat-layer reductions in the order of a quarter after one session for both technologies; one 2021 study of the 1060 nm laser on the abdomen found an adipose reduction of under ten per cent by ultrasound with blinded evaluators correctly identifying only around two-thirds of photographs.
- Verdict
- Established Long clinical track record. Results depend on selection and technique more than on the device.
- Evidence base
- 4 PubMed-indexed studies cited below, including systematic reviews.
- Suits
- Fit people at a stable weight with small, pinchable pockets on the abdomen, flanks, thighs or under the chin, who want a modest change without needles or downtime.
- Not for
- Significant excess fat, loose skin after weight loss or pregnancy, or anyone who expects a dress size. Visceral fat is untouched by any surface device.
- In Singapore
- truSculpt and SculpSure are HSA-registered medical devices used in doctor-run clinics in Singapore.

What it is
Two ways of heating subcutaneous fat from the outside until fat cells are injured and cleared over weeks. truSculpt iD uses monopolar radiofrequency through flat handpieces; SculpSure uses a 1060 nm diode laser through applicators strapped to the area. Both treat the abdomen, flanks, thighs and under the chin in short sessions.
How it works
Fat is more sensitive to sustained heat than skin: holding the fat layer at around 42 to 47 degrees for several minutes triggers adipocyte death while contact cooling or temperature feedback protects the surface. The cleared fat is absorbed over eight to twelve weeks. The visible change depends on fat-layer thickness, skin recoil and weight stability; neither device is a weight-loss tool, and loose skin may look looser once the fat beneath it shrinks.
What the evidence says
Single-arm, manufacturer-supported studies with ultrasound measurement report fat-layer reductions in the order of a quarter after one session for both technologies; one 2021 study of the 1060 nm laser on the abdomen found an adipose reduction of under ten per cent by ultrasound with blinded evaluators correctly identifying only around two-thirds of photographs. A 2018 systematic review of how fat reduction is measured concluded that every available method has significant limitations, which should temper the percentages quoted in brochures. No head-to-head randomised trials against fat freezing exist.

- cohort
An open-label study reported measurable flank fat reduction after 1060 nm laser treatment with a favourable safety profile.

- case series
A small series using temperature-controlled monopolar RF reported reduced fat thickness on ultrasound after one session, without a control group.

- systematic review
Across 36 studies, every method of measuring non-invasive fat reduction had significant limitations, from subjective photographs to operator-dependent ultrasound.

| What it is | Two ways of heating subcutaneous fat from the outside until fat cells are injured and cleared over weeks. | A suction cup cools a pinched fold of fat to a temperature that triggers fat-cell death while sparing skin and nerves. | A paddle delivers high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy that forces supramaximal muscle contractions — tens of thousands in a session — combined with radiofrequency heating of the overlying fat layer. |
| Evidence base | 4 PubMed-indexed studies cited below, including systematic reviews. | 3 PubMed-indexed studies cited below, including systematic reviews. | 3 PubMed-indexed studies cited below, including systematic reviews. |
| Suits | Fit people at a stable weight with small, pinchable pockets on the abdomen, flanks, thighs or under the chin, who want a modest change without needles or downtime. | Discrete pinchable pockets — flanks, lower abdomen — in people with good skin recoil who want reduction, not definition. | Fit people with small, stubborn fat pockets who want more definition; post-partum abdominal tone as part of a broader plan. |
| In one line | Non-invasive fat reduction is honest work at small scale; the brochures are the problem, not the physics. | Reducing fat under skin that has already lost its recoil leaves the same outline and looser skin — settle which is dominant first. | For the rest, map the fat and skin first — the plane decides the tool. |
Risks
Warmth, redness and tenderness for a day; occasional firm nodules that settle over weeks; rare blisters or burns with poor contact or temperature control.

truSculpt and SculpSure are HSA-registered medical devices used in doctor-run clinics in Singapore. Dr Sin Yong's 4K Body Lift uses a different plane, RF microneedling, for contour with tightening.
