Emtone and Exion for cellulite

RF + acoustic wave · 'cellulite machines'

'Cellulite machines' circulate on TikTok and Instagram as the comfortable, no-downtime alternative to surgery, with Emtone and Exion the devices most clinics now advertise for thighs and buttocks.

Search interest: about 200 searches a month in Singapore for “cellulite treatment” (Ahrefs, October 2026).

The verdict Promising

Cellulite is a tether, not a texture problem, and heat alone does not untie it.

Does Emtone and Exion for cellulite work?

Promising. Cellulite is a tether, not a texture problem, and heat alone does not untie it. The published data are small, open-label and largely manufacturer-linked.

Verdict
Promising Plausible mechanism and early evidence. Reasonable to try with realistic expectations.
Evidence base
3 PubMed-indexed studies cited below, including systematic reviews.
Suits
Mild, diffuse cellulite with crepey or lax skin in someone near a stable weight, who wants smoother texture and accepts maintenance.
Not for
Deep, discrete dimples tethered by thick septa, which need release not heat. Significant excess fat. Anyone expecting a one-course solution.
In Singapore
BTL's Emtone and Exion are distributed in Singapore and used in doctor-run clinics; confirm the device's HSA registration with the provider.

What it is

Emtone applies monopolar radiofrequency and targeted pressure energy (acoustic shock waves) through one handpiece; Exion is the same manufacturer's newer platform combining RF with ultrasound, offered for body skin as well as the face. Both are non-invasive, comfortable and sold in courses of four to six sessions.

How it works

Radiofrequency heats the dermis and upper fat to a temperature at which collagen contracts and remodels; the acoustic waves mechanically disturb the fibrous septa that tether skin into dimples and improve local circulation and fluid clearance. Nothing is cut, so septa are loosened rather than released, which is why the effect is partial and fades. Skin quality, septal thickness and body-fat percentage decide the result far more than the device.

What the evidence says

The published data are small, open-label and largely manufacturer-linked. A 2018 series of 30 women reported improvement in cellulite grade after four sessions, with ultrasound showing a thicker dermis and a thinner fat layer; a 2023 series on multiple body parts found similar results. There is no sham-controlled trial of either device, and a 2025 systematic review of cellulite treatments places energy-based devices as modest, temporary options behind subcision for defined dimples. Reviews from patients split sharply between visible smoothing and no change at all.

What the studies show

  1. case series

In 30 women, four sessions of combined RF and targeted pressure energy improved cellulite grade and thigh circumference, with ultrasound showing dermal thickening and a thinner fat layer.

  2. case series

An open-label series reported improvement in cellulite appearance on several body areas after a course of combined RF and acoustic treatment, without a control group.

Combined Monopolar Radiofrequency and Targeted Pressure Energy for the Treatment and Improvement of Cellulite Appearance on Multiple Body Parts. — J Clin Aesthet Dermatol, 2023. PMID 37288281.

  3. systematic review

Across modalities, mechanical septa release gave the most durable results for defined dimples, while energy-based devices offered modest, temporary improvement.

Transient redness, warmth and tenderness; rare superficial burns with poor contact. The commoner risk is disappointment after a paid course.

Questions

Does Emtone get rid of cellulite?
It softens mild, diffuse cellulite and improves skin texture for a time. Defined dimples usually need the band released.
How long do results last?
Months rather than years; clinics plan maintenance sessions, which tells you the effect is partial.
Emtone or subcision?
Different problems. Heat for diffuse texture; release for individual dimples. Many plans need both.
