Collagen drinks and peptides · 'collagen banking' by mouth
'Collagen banking' content on TikTok has folded collagen drinks and powders into a prevention routine for people in their twenties, and the category is one of the fastest-growing in beauty supplements.

The trials show a small, instrument-measured improvement in hydration; they do not show a face that looks different. Collagen is built in the dermis by energy and retinoids, not banked by the glass.

Promising. The trials show a small, instrument-measured improvement in hydration; they do not show a face that looks different. Collagen is built in the dermis by energy and retinoids, not banked by the glass. Two meta-analyses of randomised trials — 19 trials in one, 26 in the other — found small improvements in hydration and elasticity after around 90 days, with wrinkle effects smaller and less consistent.
- Verdict
- Promising Plausible mechanism and early evidence. Reasonable to try with realistic expectations.

What it is
Hydrolysed collagen is animal collagen (bovine, porcine or marine) broken down into short peptides and sold as powders, drinks or capsules. The claim is that swallowing it improves skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkles.
How it works
Peptides are absorbed into the blood, and specific dipeptides such as prolyl-hydroxyproline appear in plasma after a dose. The proposed mechanism is that these fragments signal fibroblasts to make more collagen and hyaluronic acid, rather than being incorporated directly. Dose, peptide profile and duration vary widely between products, and most are tested by the company that sells them.
What the evidence says
Two meta-analyses of randomised trials — 19 trials in one, 26 in the other — found small improvements in hydration and elasticity after around 90 days, with wrinkle effects smaller and less consistent. Most included trials were industry-funded, used different products and measured outcomes with instruments rather than by what a person sees; one analysis noted that higher-quality independent trials did not show a significant effect. There is no evidence that collagen taken in your twenties 'banks' anything for your forties.

What the studies show
- systematic review
Nineteen randomised trials (1,125 participants) showed improved hydration and elasticity after about 90 days, with smaller effects on wrinkles.

- systematic review
Twenty-six randomised trials (1,721 patients) showed improved hydration and elasticity but flagged bias in the included studies and called for large independent trials.

| Verdict | Promising | Vetted | Established |
| What it is | Hydrolysed collagen is animal collagen (bovine, porcine or marine) broken down into short peptides and sold as powders, drinks or capsules. | Insulated or non-insulated microneedles deliver radiofrequency energy at a chosen depth below the surface. | Niacinamide is vitamin B3 in its amide form, a water-soluble ingredient used at two to ten per cent in serums and moisturisers. |

| Suits | People who like the ritual and accept a modest, slow effect on hydration and elasticity; those with low dietary protein. | Acne scars, enlarged pores, early laxity, melasma-prone skin that cannot take ablative lasers, and selected body contouring when the plane is mapped first. | Almost everyone: oily, blotchy, acne-prone or barrier-compromised skin, and as a tolerable companion to retinoids and acids. |
| In one line | The trials show a small, instrument-measured improvement in hydration; they do not show a face that looks different. Collagen is built in the dermis by energy and retinoids, not banked by the glass. | The tissue plane, not the device, decides whether you tighten skin or remodel fat. The brand war is a distraction from that. | It will not change a face, but it makes everything else in the routine easier to tolerate, which is worth more than most hero ingredients deliver. |
Risks
Mild digestive upset, a bad taste, and heavy-metal contamination in poorly made products. Otherwise the risk is to the budget.
