Stretch mark treatments
striae distensae · striae rubra and alba · stretch mark removal · laser stretch mark treatment
Stretch marks are among the most-asked-about marks on TikTok and the most over-promised: 'removal' is the word in every advertisement, and the honest literature does not use it.
Search interest: about 150 searches a month in Singapore for “stretch mark treatment” (Ahrefs, October 2026).
Red marks respond; white marks soften; the word 'removal' belongs to the advertisement, not to the studies.
Reviewed against the Aesthetics International standard. Category: Lasers.Do Stretch mark treatments work?
Established. Red marks respond; white marks soften; the word 'removal' belongs to the advertisement, not to the studies. Systematic reviews in 2014, 2017 and 2021 and a network meta-analysis in 2020 agree on the shape of the evidence: most modalities improve striae modestly, striae rubra respond better than alba, combination approaches do better than single ones, and study quality is low with short follow-up.
- Verdict
- Established Long clinical track record. Results depend on selection and technique more than on the device.
- Evidence base
- 5 PubMed-indexed studies cited below, including systematic reviews, meta-analyses.
- Suits
- New red or purple striae, where response is largest; older white striae in people who will accept softening and narrowing rather than removal; darker skin treated with microneedling or conservative fractional settings.
- Not for
- Anyone promised removal; active pregnancy; people who want a single-session fix; and aggressive ablative settings on Fitzpatrick IV to VI skin without a test patch.
- In Singapore
- Stretch mark treatments in Singapore are offered by doctor-run clinics using HSA-registered microneedling, radiofrequency and laser devices; salons offer superficial versions with little evidence.

What it is
Stretch marks are linear dermal scars caused by rapid stretching of the skin — growth spurts, pregnancy, weight change, muscle gain, steroid use. New ones (striae rubra) are red or purple and inflamed; older ones (striae alba) are pale, atrophic and sometimes wrinkled. Treatments aim to remodel the collagen and, in red striae, to settle the vessels.
How it works
Microneedling and radiofrequency microneedling injure the dermis to trigger collagen remodelling; fractional ablative and non-ablative lasers do the same with heat columns; vascular lasers and IPL target the redness of new striae; excimer or 1540 nm lasers can partly repigment white striae; topical tretinoin helps early striae. All of them narrow and soften; none restores normal skin.

What the evidence says
Systematic reviews in 2014, 2017 and 2021 and a network meta-analysis in 2020 agree on the shape of the evidence: most modalities improve striae modestly, striae rubra respond better than alba, combination approaches do better than single ones, and study quality is low with short follow-up. A 2024 meta-analysis found microneedling gives meaningful improvement with a favourable safety profile across skin types. A Cochrane review found no reliable evidence that topical preparations prevent stretch marks in pregnancy.

What the studies show
- systematic review
Tretinoin, fractional lasers and other modalities produce partial improvement, with striae rubra responding better than alba; the review found no treatment that removes striae and weak evidence for prevention.
Striae distensae: a comprehensive review and evidence-based evaluation of prophylaxis and treatment. — Br J Dermatol, 2014. PMID 24125059.
- network meta-analysis
Across randomised trials, energy-based and combination treatments ranked above single topical therapy for improvement, with heterogeneity and limited follow-up tempering the conclusions.
Comparative effectiveness of different therapies for treating striae distensae: A systematic review and network meta-analysis. — Medicine (Baltimore), 2020. PMID 32991422.
- meta-analysis
Microneedling produced significant improvement in striae appearance in pooled studies, with a low rate of pigmentary complications, making it suitable across Fitzpatrick skin types.
Microneedling Therapy for Striae Distensae: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. — Aesthetic Plast Surg, 2024. PMID 38509316.
- systematic review
Combined treatments outperformed single modalities for both striae rubra and alba, and the type of stria should guide the choice of treatment.
Systematic review of single and combined treatments for different types of striae: a comparison of striae treatments. — J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol, 2021. PMID 34021922.
- systematic review
Six trials of creams and oils found no statistically significant difference in the development of stretch marks compared with placebo or no treatment.
Topical preparations for preventing stretch marks in pregnancy. — Cochrane Database Syst Rev, 2012. PMID 23152199.

|---|---|---|---|
| Verdict | Established | Vetted | Established |
| What it is | Stretch marks are linear dermal scars caused by rapid stretching of the skin — growth spurts, pregnancy, weight change, muscle gain, steroid use. | A picosecond laser delivers energy in pulses a thousand times shorter than the nanosecond lasers that came before it. | Light at a wavelength absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft travels down the follicle and heats it enough to damage the cells that regrow hair. |
| Evidence base | 5 PubMed-indexed studies cited below, including systematic reviews, meta-analyses. | 4 PubMed-indexed studies cited below, including systematic reviews. | 4 PubMed-indexed studies cited below, including systematic reviews. |
| Suits | New red or purple striae, where response is largest; older white striae in people who will accept softening and narrowing rather than removal; darker skin treated with microneedling or conservative fractional settings. | Sun spots, freckles, post-acne marks, tattoo ink, uneven tone in Asian skin when energy is set conservatively. | Dark, coarse hair on any body area; darker skin treated with Nd:YAG or long-pulsed diode by an experienced operator; ingrown hairs and folliculitis from shaving. |
| In one line | Red marks respond; white marks soften; the word 'removal' belongs to the advertisement, not to the studies. | The variable that matters is depth, not brightness, and pigment already deposited is only half the problem; the inflammation producing it is the other half. | It is reduction, not removal; the sessions that matter are the ones matched to your skin colour, not the ones sold in the package. |
Risks
Redness and swelling for days; post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the main risk in Asian skin with lasers; rare blistering or scarring with over-treatment; disappointment when expectation was 'gone'.
In Singapore
Stretch mark treatments in Singapore are offered by doctor-run clinics using HSA-registered microneedling, radiofrequency and laser devices; salons offer superficial versions with little evidence. Because most patients here are Fitzpatrick III to V, pigmentation risk shapes the choice of device and settings, and a test area is reasonable before treating a large field.
